In Portugal, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a central element of environmental policy, requiring producers to assume responsibility for the end‑of‑life management of the products they place on the market, through the fulfilment of specific legal requirements and cooperation with recognised producer responsibility organisations.

The scope of EPR in Portugal currently covers a broad and expanding range of specific waste streams, including, among others: packaging, deposit‑return system, electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and accumulators, lubricating oils, tyres, end‑of‑life vehicles, fishing gear, plastic cups and tobacco products. This framework is continuously evolving, with the expected inclusion of additional waste streams such as textiles and furniture.
